PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To plan, schedule and control incoming work to meet target dates, and allocate, supervise and accept work completed by subordinates for the fabrication, repair, maintenance and installation of piping including the maintenance, repair and overhauling of heat exchangers on the SA Navy vessels and to provide supervision in the Pipe Fitting and Boiler Making Workshop.
CRITICAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
- Organize workflow and assign work to personnel to ensure attainment of section’s objectives in accordance to company policies, work procedures, work instructions, project schedules, work orders and employee capabilities.
- Supervise pipe fabrication, repair and installation activities and apply knowledge of various materials, hot work processes, cutting techniques, welding equipment and fabrication requirements.
- Set performance goals and deadlines in ways that comply with divisional plan, evaluate employee’s performance, accountability and provide feedback for continued employee growth.
- Disciplines staff as and when required in accordance with company disciplinary procedures and institutes corrective action.
- Provide specialist advice on ship repair, construction, maintenance and installation to ensure work is carried out to the correct naval standards.
- Conduct risk assessment and ensure work is carried out in compliance to OHS Act and housekeeping requirements.
- Ensuring that the staff are utilized effectively and efficiently.
- Liaise with Section Manager on capacity problems and workshop clerk on administrative duties.
- Ensure that work is completed within the estimated time, to the correct applicable standards and that all documentation is completed to ensure client satisfaction.
- Provide technical input on specific equipment, control items, items of supply for budgetary and/or purchasing purposes.
- Provide technical input for configuration management and control by verifying and proposing technical documentation changes relating to systems and spares
- Undertaking of specified personnel administrative responsibilities to ensure an efficient and highly motivated workforce
QUALIFICATIONS
- National Technical Diploma/ National Diploma in mechanical engineering
- Trade Certificate Pipe Fitting or Boiler making (Red seal) or Pipe Fitter Category 5 would be an added advantage
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 5 years post qualification technical experience in the pipe fitting or Boiler making field.
- 2 Years Supervisory experience
- Added advantages:
- Experience in Marine and military industrial environment.
- Experience in the manufacturing and boat building field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Gathering and analyzing information/data from various sources in order to determine the cause of a problems and proposing appropriate solutions.
- Literate in interpreting technical procedures and welding standards.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and welding symbols.
SPECIAL PROFICIENCY/SKILLS
- Knowledge of various materials, applicable codes, pipe fabrication and repair techniques, and equipment used in the pipe fitting and Boilermaking trade.
- Knowledge of the Occupational, Health and Safety Act.
- Basic knowledge of other supporting trades such shipwrights, welding and fitting.
- Skilled in the handling of personnel problems professionally.
- Ability to function as part of a team.
- Leadership abilities.
- Great attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Computer literate

ABOUT THE JOB:
To provide physical and project security and transport services to the Dockyard by monitoring and managing physical environment and activities in order to bring the Dockyard’s physical security risks under explicit managed control.
QUALIFICATION
- Diploma in Security Management
- Code B driving license.
- National Key Point (NKP) Training Certificate will be an added advantage.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience in security services.
- Minimum 2 years management experience.
CRITICAL PERFORMANCE AREAS
The incumbent will be responsible to perform the following functions but not limited to;
- Manage attendance and leave, discipline staff in the Section and initiate corrective action where necessary.
- Lead and guide Protection Officers in order to expedite response/action in case of an emergency to ensure effective and efficient handling of situation.
- Manage safety and security of all allocated resources in terms of the Occupational Health and safety Act and prescribed regulations.
- Identify and prioritize actual and potential risk areas which could affect the safety and security of the Armscor Dockyard and its resources.
- Manage security and protection of South African Navy (SAN) and Commercial Vessels under Dockyard’s control, by co-ordinating and guiding Armscor Dockyard in the execution of security and risk related directives.
- Investigate breaches of security and report serious security issues directly to Management and provide corrective measures accordingly.
- Liaise with other Defence Units regarding security-related issues, including area protection, perimeter control, disaster control, fire-fighting and access control, to ensure cost-effective and efficient application of resources.
- Liaise with senior management on handling of top management and VIP visitors; draw up policy and procedures for protection of top management and VIP visitors; ensure optimal and safe handling, escorting and protection of VIPs.
- Management of the transport function and provision of transport service to the Dockyard by implementing and maintaining a vehicle management system.
- Analyse status of fleet and recommend maintenance/replacement plan.
- Manage/perform centralised security related matters such as key control practices and access control.
- Manage/perform tasks unrelated to security as instructed by Management.
