PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To supply an efficient and effective Mechanical Fitting service capability to the fleet of the South African Navy, its various shore establishments and visiting ships.
CRITICAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
- To implement tasks as assigned by supervisors in line with estimated timelines
- Interpret job card requirements and identify all required resources to perform a job
- To adhere to Occupational Health and Safety regulations and initiate appropriate actions and rectify any unsafe activities.
- Conduct risk assessments and mitigate any identified risks
- Identify procedures to be followed and collate all requirements
- Execute the job adhering to all instructions, procedures, policies and regulations and stay within time and cost constraints.
- Liaise with, support and assist superiors, project managers and other sections to ensure optimum completion of jobs by the Dockyard.
- Complete and maintain all applicable records
- Abide by, promote and partake in all safety, health, environmental, quality and security requirements of the Dockyard
- Lead and supervise colleagues, junior staff as well as contractors and assist with their training requirement.
- Supervises other regular employees during a minor portion of the employee’s work time; duties include assigning and reviewing work.
QUALIFICATIONS
- N3 and Trade Certificate in appropriate trade endorsed by the Department of Labour or applicable Seta (Red seal).
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2 years technical experience in an industrial or similar environment.
SPECIAL PROFICIENCY/SKILLS
- Knowledge and working experience on maintaining, repairing and overhauling of marine propulsion systems, steering gear systems, a wide variety of winches, pumps and valves.
- Ability to use, read and interpret detailed drawings, measuring instruments, technical manuals and blueprints
- Experience in conducting simple machining operations on conventional lathes, drill presses and milling machines.
- Experience in conducting trouble-shooting and diagnostics on mechanical systems.
- Ability to utilize workshop hand tools, lifting tackle and overhead cranes.
- 5s cleaning standards
- Ability to plan job accordingly in relation to resources required.
- Must be willing to work overtime
- Ability to function as part of a team
- Ability to work in heights, and confined spaces
- Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Sound knowledge of safety requirements related to mechanical fitting
- Sound Knowledge of quality control requirements related to mechanical fitting.
