The Institute of Marine Technology (IMT), a division of state-owned company Armscor, showcased its ultrasonic broken rail detection system developed for the African railway industry at the 14th SARA Rail Conference and Exhibiton at the Sandton Convention Centre, in Johannesburg.
This system addresses the growing threats of broken rails, which can cause delays, derailments and have economic impacts. It offers real-time monitoring, enhancing safety and throughput for operators.
Engineering News interviewed IMT senior manager Dr Vusi Malaza about the technology, which integrates into existing digital systems, aiding informed decision-making. IMT aims to contribute to the maturity and reliability of Africa’s railway networks, promoting a common strategy for stakeholder collaboration and growth within the industry.
