Armscor Dockyard, Engineering Services Division has a vacancy for a Corrosion Engineer. Applications are invited from people meeting the qualifications and experience requirements set out below.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
- To provide an affective Corrosion Prevention, Control and Protective Coating Consulting Service to the SA Navy and Armscor Dockyard.
CRITICAL PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Provide advice on coating technology and new developments in the field of Corrosion Control Engineering to the Stakeholders, South African Navy and Dockyard.
- Design, install, operate, and maintain cathodic protection facilities, anodes, and corrosion control facilities.
- Draw up preparation and painting specifications for various surfaces and ensure correct interpretation thereof.
- Carry out field trials and accelerated corrosion tests by utilizing the corrosion salt spray chamber.
- Provide a consultancy service on the selection of coatings based on performance and life expectancy of a coating system by describing all aspects of coatings technology ranging from on surface preparation, acceptable environmental conditions, and application procedures and identify specific mandatory quality control procedures.
- Provide technical advice on all materials relating to corrosion and corrosion prevention/protection to the South African Navy, Internal personnel and external Stakeholders.
- Provide a complete consultancy on all aspects of corrosion control including design, improvisation, constructing, manufacturing, installation, maintenance and monitoring.
- Confirm that ship system managers are kept fully informed of any corrosion related problems / specifications or procedures that affect their vessels and other platforms and structures.
- Carry out cathodic protection monitoring and examine cathodic protection reports to ensure existing systems are functional.
- Carry out monthly on-board checks and provide corrective action on all Impressed Current Cathodic Protection Systems (ICCP) and Sacrificial Anode systems on Ships and Submarines.
- Undertake all coating failure investigations both in the field and in the laboratory to provide current and future solutions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BSc Chemical Engineering/BSc (Hons) Chemistry/BSc (Hons) Materials Science
- M. Tech in Science & Engineering will be an added advantage
- Registration with ECSA or relevant body as Engineering Technician or eligible for registration will be an added advantage.
EXPERIENCE:
- 5 years’ experience in Corrosion Control & Prevention Industry.
- Knowledge in a combination of the following: Corrosion failure investigation, field and laboratory testing will be an added advantage.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Have an understanding of microbiological technology to recognize and overcome microbiological corrosion problems.
- Have an adequate knowledge of metallic coating systems, e.g., hot dip galvanising (HDG), electroplating, metal spraying, and chemical conversion coatings (e.g., phosphating) and anodising.
- Have an adequate knowledge of environmental control to know when this approach would be suitable (e.g., vapour phase corrosion inhibitors) for corrosion prevention.
- Have specialist knowledge of corrosion in marine environments.
