Research and Development Business Unit has a vacancy for a Chief Technologist: Software Systems (Maritime Domain Awareness) at Institute for Maritime Technology (IMT) in Simon’s Town, Western Cape. Applications are invited from people who meet the qualification and experience requirements below:
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The role of a Chief Technologist (Software Developer) is to contribute to IMT projects by conducting engineering software designs, creating software applications and integrating the software to the hardware systems.
CRITICAL PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- To setup, design and develop computer models for simulation as well as interpret results for mathematical verification.
- To develop solutions to software design tasks of a medium complex nature.
- Expert contribution to the development, integration, application and analysis of naval systems (in domain specific capability area).
- To manage and execute technically challenging projects with multiple specialist and support personnel as team members.
- To decide on applied technology implementation within a defined project which will influence readiness in the medium term.
- To translate client expectations into a valid applied and practical technical cost effective solution.
- Provide original applied software design solutions of a technical challenging nature.
- To develop solutions to technical challenging technology problems with focus on applied and practical application of engineering principles and document it in technical reports.
- To write technical reports specifying raw data as well as interpretation of results and make recommendations.
- Execution of system tests (hardware integrated to software) and document test results.
- Interpret complex measured results and propose actions and recommendations.
- Be responsible for making complex technology decisions as part of engineering activities.
- To provide inputs to the IMT long-term capability development plan.
- To create and maintain client interfaces in order to promote own technical area/expertise.
- To communicate and network with client in support of IMT objectives and identify new business opportunities.
- To network with industry in order to be aware of the latest available technology in area of expertise.
- To identify opportunities for IMT process improvement.
- To undertake professional development activities, sufficient to maintain and extend competence in specified areas.
- To mentor and share expertise with team members with less experience based on area of specialization.
- May represent IMT on conferences, seminars, exhibitions and workshops.
- To network with industry, academia, etc. to be aware of the latest available technology in area of expertise.
- To enhance client relationship to ensure continuation of business.
- Responsible for appropriate allocated ad hoc tasks (e.g. organisational, technical, sea going, diving, SHEQ, etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- M-Tech Engineering (Electronics or Mechatronics)
- ECSA registration will be an advantage.
TECHNICAL / LEGAL CERTIFICATE / PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION
- ECSA registration as a Professional Technologist. (IPET / ECSA etc.) recommended.
EXPERIENCE:
- 12 – 15 years’ experience.
- Experience in Software Programming / Development (e.g. C++, C#, Python or Java).
- Experience in interfacing equipment at signal and software level (including Radar and sensor integration / networking).
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of modeling, simulation and solution procedures.
- Sound knowledge of Software Programming (e.g. C++, C#, Python or Java).
- Knowledge of applicable software development tools and modelling / simulation applications.
- Hardware and software integration knowledge.
- Knowledge of different signal interface standards (e.g. RS422, NMEA, Asterix, etc.).
- Knowledge of internet protocols and networking standards (e.g. TCP/IP, UDP, VPNs, etc.).
- Knowledge of AIS, LRIT, IFF, ADSB and WECDIS will be an advantage.
- Knowledge of IMT Project Management
- Knowledgeable in systems principles.
- Expert knowledge of processes of engineering
- Awareness of Acquisition Management Practices
- The ability to translate client requirements into a valid applied and practical technical solution.
- Expert knowledge of Techno Maritime area.
- Knowledge of relevant Armscor & IMT Policies, Practices and Procedures.
- Relevant Safety, Health and Environmental legislation and standards.
