Alkantpan Test Range, located in the central semi-desert part of South Africa, is a strategic ISO 9001 all-purpose ballistic test range for medium to large calibre weapons and ammunition. Various related tests are also catered for, like Insensitive Munitions, Hazard Classification, Ageing, Surveillance Trails, etc.

Alkantpan provides a client focused ordnance test and evaluation service with the objective of adding value to the product of the client through a professional cost-effective service. To achieve this, Alkantpan develops long-term relationships with its customers, protects their intellectual property and strives to exceed the required quality standards and expectations.

Alkantpan is orientated east –west with the five firing sites and administrative buildings situated on the eastern side. The test range is primarily designed for medium and large calibre guns, rockets and short range ground to ground missiles.

However, a wide variety of tests have been done and can be done at Alkantpan. The sparse vegetation, low rainfall and firing distances up to 55 000 meters, make it an ideal range for any type of conventional ammunition. In special cases and if ammunition without explosives is tested, firing distances of up to 70 000 meters can be obtained. Hazard Classification tests and Insensitive Munitions tests can also be done at Alkantpan.
Alkantpan has five firing sites that can be used simultaneously. The firing sites are designed to protect personnel and equipment against any catastrophic failure of the weapon or ammunition.

The instrumentation personnel provide a wide variety of measurements including:

Tracking radar • Stress and strain • Muzzle velocity • Vibrations and accelerations
• Chamber pressure • Fuse frequencies • Blast overpressure • Burst heights

LAY OUT OF THE RANGE

The range is approximately 65 km long and 13 km wide with an average vegetation height of 300 mm. The airspace above Alkantpan is a no flying zone and there is only one public road across the range, well outside the normal firing distances. This, together with a low rainfall, average 200 mm per year, gives Alkantpan an all-year round test capability.

Daytime summer temperatures are between 35°C and 40°C and night-time winter temperatures are between -4°C and +6°C. During August the wind speeds are relatively high, especially in the upper air.

The nearly flat terrain and sparse vegetation are an advantage for observation and recovery tests. A multitude of observation posts cover the range and make it possible to fire any distance with good observation.

TYPE OF TESTS

Alkantpan is equipped for testing all kinds of weaponry, ranging in calibre from 20 mm to 155 mm and larger and in variety from artillery to aircraft and naval systems.

The flat terrain and sparse vegetation make it an ideal range for sub ammunition tests and the long distance capability, good observation and relative stable weather, an ideal place for range table firings. Tests conducted at Alkantpan include artillery, both direct and indirect, rockets, tank guns, anti-tank missiles, anti-aircraft guns, short-range missiles and naval guns.

Alkantpan can also do insensitive ammunition tests such as fuel burning, slow cook-off, bullet attack, etc. A high-speed rocket rail is available for special tests.

Cooperation agreements with other organizations in South Africa make it possible to do a wide variety of environmental tests such as vibration, shock, bounce, diurnal cycling and drop tests. Drop tests up to 16 m can be done on live ammunition of up to 3 tons.
