Protechnik Laboratories is one of a group of Defence Science and Technology Institutes (DSTI’s) within Armscor Defence Institutes SOC Ltd, and conducts project work in the field of chemical and biological defence on behalf of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). Protechnik also provides technical support under contract to the South African Council for the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction on technical aspects related to the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

In addition to the above, new business opportunities are explored in the areas of contract synthesis of commercial fine chemicals, analytical method development, analysis of commercial products and environmental samples, testing and evaluation of respiratory equipment for homologation purposes and quality assurance on behalf of commercial clients.

Thus the Laboratory specialises in:

  • Protection of personnel in chemically hazardous environments
  • Evaluation of protective materials and equipment
  • Detection and analysis of trace amounts of hazardous chemicals
  • Impregnation and characterisation of activated carbon
  • Evaluation of respiratory equipment and their constituent components
  • Technical support with regard to weapons of mass destruction non-proliferation treaties
  • Data collection and maintenance of an information database on biological weapons
  • Synthesis of test compounds and verification reference standards
  • Contract synthesis of organic fine chemicals
  • Analysis of commercial chemical products and environmental samples
  • Testing of respiratory equipment to SABS and EN Standards
  • Detection of biological warfare agents and other biological compounds

CHEMICAL DEFENCE EVALUATION RESEARCH INSTITUTE

OVERVIEW
The institute performs applied chemical and biological research and development work for the Department of Defence and provides a professional and secure advisory service.

Project work is performed in the areas defined in the Chemical Biological and Radiological Defence policy as approved by the Department of Defence in 1999. The research activities are focused mainly on the development and evaluation of chemical defence equipment for hot and dusty climatic conditions.
The project work is performed in a custom designed laboratory complex in Centurion. The facility includes a containment laboratory complex which is specially equipped to work with toxic and hazardous chemicals and biological agents. This laboratory complex has been registered as South Africa’s Single Small Scale Facility in terms of the Chemical Weapons Convention, and is regularly inspected by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, based in The Hague, The Netherlands.
The well-equipped laboratories are staffed by experienced personnel, and all project leaders possess masters or doctorate degrees in some branch of chemistry.

The institute’s activities are centered around eight  functional laboratories and can be summarised as follows:

CHEMISTRY

CARBON
