HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

The Armaments Corporation of South Africa SOC Ltd (ARMSCOR) was established in terms of the Armaments Production and Development Act, Act No 57 of 1968, to satisfy the requirements of the South African National Defence Force in respect of defence matériel.

All the production business units of Armscor were separated in 1992 to form the state-owned company Denel, and the Armaments Production and Development Act was revised to reflect the new functions of Armscor.

The diagram below summarises the historical overview of Armscor from 1948 to 1998:

The Armaments Corporation of South Africa Limited Act, Act No 51 of 2003, was enacted to provide for the continued existence of Armscor and to provide for the functions, accountability and finances of the corporation for matters connected therewith.
